A typical job description is usually about the responsibilities and duties of the job, but what responsibilities and duties do managers and young people have to both themselves, and other workers, to ensure they are contributing to an emotionally safe workspace?

We’ve asked young people what they look for in an ideal supervisor, and asked managers what they would like to see in their employees. See the job descriptions below and see how you are contributing to a positive and productive working environment.

Role: SUPERVISOR LEADING A TEAM OF YOUNG WORKERS
Job Overview:

To supervise Young Workers, provide them with an emotionally safe workspace to learn new skills, develop their workplace identity and foster their growth as a valued team member.
Responsibilities & Duties:

To teach new skills and create an environment where a young person can feel confident to ask questions and is supported to do so.

To create an environment where Young People feel like they are working WITH the supervisor and manager.

To create clear and firm boundaries and set realistic expectations for Young Workers

To create, expect and model an environment that is safe and inclusive of all people.

To create a space where Young People can talk about any uncertainty they have in the job role.

To create job roles that have clear descriptions and communications re activities required to be undertaken.

To create a space for check ins and support for Young People to access support either within the organisation or externally.

To gain an understanding of the employment pathway the Young Person may wish to take within the organisation and create opportunities to investigate what options may be available.

To take a Young Person seriously and let them know they have been heard.
Qualifications:

Be approachable and have a preparedness to be a role model for the next generation of workforce.
Role: YOUNG PERSON ENTERING A WORKPLACE
Job Overview:

To contribute to an emotionally safe workspace, to learn new skills, develop a workplace identity and grow as a valued team member.
Responsibilities & Duties:

To learn new skills and ask questions about the job.

To work with the Supervisor and Manager to be part of a team with them.

To be clear about and adhere to the workplace boundaries.

To contribute positively to an environment that is safe and inclusive of all people.

To be prepared to talk about any uncertainty they have in the job role.

To ask questions and clarify expectations relating to the job role.

To be prepared to check in and access support either within the organisation or externally as required.

To take on career development opportunities, investigate what options may be available.

To take work colleagues seriously and let them know they have been heard.
Qualifications:

Be approachable and show preparedness to be a role model for peers in the workforce.
